The John Lennon Wall Memorial

What was once just a normal wall, since the 1980s it has come alive with dedications to the famous Beatle and artist, John Lennon. Covered in John Lennon inspired graffiti and lyrics to the Beatle’s songs, the wall is a colourful delight. The wall is constantly undergoing changes, with the original first portrait of John Lennon long lost under layers of paint.

Despite several attempts to clear the wall with repeated whitewash, the police never managed to keep it clean for long. The John Lennon wall became a political focus for Prague, and it survives to this day. Visiting tourists began making their own contributions over the years. Respectfully add your own piece to the wall, or just take in the history of it all and enjoy the view. You’ll also often find artists and singers playing classic Beatles songs standing to the side of the wall to add to the effect.

What's There & Nearby Locations

The wall not only represents a memorial to John Lennon and his ideas for peace, but it’s also a monument to free speech and the non-violent rebellion of the Czech youth against the communist police and regime at the time. The wall had to go through reconstruction in 1998 due to it’s crumbling façade, but the spirit still lives on. Communist graffiti is now covered in messages of love and peace. You’ll find the wall located at Velkoprevorske Namesti, Mala Strana. It’s a short walk from the Charles Bridge.

Nearby you’ll find the Charles Bridge, which connects the old town to the new town. A worthy sight of getting up early for to see in it’s full glory; before the masses of tourist and performers descend for the day. Look out onto the Vltava river it crosses, and admire the statues which line the path of the bridge.
