Reaching Applecross Peninsula

Once you’ve navigated your way up and over the winding hairpin bends of the Bealach na Bà road, you’ll reach Applecross. Or as the locals know it ‘the street’. A remote peninsula in Wester Ross in the Scottish Highlands, Applecross feels like the edge of the world, in a good way.

Believed to be one of Scotland’s earliest settlements, it’s easy to get lost in the beauty and quiet atmosphere of life by the water here. With incredible views across the bay to Raasay and the Isle of Skye, it’s one of the quietest spots in the Highlands.

What’s There?

After braving the Bealach na Bà drive over the top, stop for a well deserved drink at the Applecross Inn. None alcoholic, of course. If it’s the freshest local produce around you’re looking for, check out the Applecross Smokehouse for the catch of the day.

Applecross is also home to the cutest little petrol station I have ever seen. It’s un-manned, and only in recent times does it have a more up to date filling pump and card capabilities. Amazingly, it’s also one of the cheapest places you’ll find to fill up in the Highlands. The locals rely on the input from tourists to help keep the cost of petrol low. Be sure to fill up here before the next step of your journey.

Aside from the Inn, there’s also a few quaint gift shops and galleries in the area. Not to mention the breath-taking views across the water. Sit for a while and enjoy the silence and beauty of the Highlands before moving on.

Applecross Walled Garden

If you’re not in a rush, be sure to pay a visit to the Applecross Walled Garden. It’s free to enter and relies only on donations, so give what you can. The gardens are a beautiful oasis and include a potting shed cafe and restaurant if you’re looking for somewhere local to eat. Explore the gardens and trailing paths to discover all of it’s secret gems for an hour or so.
