Edinburgh Zoo Nights
Over the past couple of years something has been going on after hours at Edinburgh Zoo. Long after the busy crowds that flood through the gates each day have left the park, zoo nights begin. An adult only event which gives the chance to be big kids for the night. Tickets cost £25 and it covers entry for the zoo from 6pm until 10pm. Each year of zoo nights has a theme, and for 2017 – that theme was carnival.
Depending on the theme of zoo nights each year, there is a mix of activities to take part in. As well as getting a chance to see the animals after hours, you can also check out the rides and stalls grab something to eat and drink (gin slushy anyone?) or even get your face painted. Come on, you know you want to be a glittery lion at heart.
Catch some educational talks with the zoo keepers to learn more about the animals living at Edinburgh Zoo. On the main lawn you’ll find the food and drink stalls, as well as the likes of the silent disco, which is always a great laugh! Or maybe if that’s not your vibe, what about learning about the DNA behind your strawberry Daiquiris whilst watching the stilt walkers strut their stuff!
What to Expect
Be sure to arrive early evening to make the most of seeing the animals. Start at the furthest away enclosures as these will start to be closed first. Head to the outer plains of Africa in search of zebras and forget you’re in the city for a while. Wear appropriate footwear as Edinburgh zoo is built on a hill! You’ll find that some of the animals will already be away to bed for the night, whereas some will just be coming out to play. The giant pandas are not on show during zoo nights.
Food & Drink
No external food or drink is allowed into the event, so if you don’t intend on purchasing food on site, do be sure to eat before hand. Food can be expensive here, like all events, but you can opt to include a food and drinks voucher with your ticket price for an extra £9 which makes things cheaper overall.
