The Classic Plaid Flannel Shirt
There’s something about autumn which makes me instantly think about plaid shirts. They’re up there with everything else that’s cosy about the season. Getting wrapped up in layers and a chunky scarf and boots against the cold; or having a quiet evening by the fire with a good book. Plaid shirts are something that have never gone out of fashion. It’s one of those guilty-pleasures. That everyone is sure to have tucked away somewhere in their wardrobe. They’re comfortably, cozy and often very inexpensive. I bought this one recently from Matalan for less than £15. Perfect for a wrap up and go kind of day!
When I was a teenager the plaid shirt was much more of a 90s grunge kind of vibe for going to see local bands perform. Or for our regular ‘indie nightclub’ where if you weren’t wearing a band tee and a plaid shirt with high waisted shorts, who were you anyway?
How To Wear It
Nowadays they’re a lot more versatile. Although the 16 year old in me still wants to dig out that old Ramones band tee. Squeezing myself into some studded shorts for old times sake! Here I’m styling a basic red plaid flannel shirt with a denim shift dress and cosy boots, perfect for autumn. Tying the shirt around my waist helps define my shape a bit more than just letting it hang. As well as working more of a tie around jacket.
Try wearing it as more of an office chic vibe with a high waisted midi skirt or cigarette trousers and some heels or coloured flats. Or for a more casual weekend look, pair with some statement ankle boots and skinny jeans layered with a sleeveless jacket for extra warmth. What’s your favourite way to style a plaid flannel shirt?
