Edinburgh International Magic Festival

I know what you’re thinking, magicians have a bad reputation for being something at children parties who pull rabbits out of hats and have a magic stick and consist of corny jokes. But it’s far from it, with the return of Edinburgh’s International Magic Festival in 2016 for the seventh year running, I headed down to their VIP launch night, as part of the Magic Festival Lates, to see what all the fuss was about. The festival is being held at Edinburgh’s Summerhall, a creative hub for the arts and studio spaces, Summerhall is a quirky venue which used to be the former school of Veterinary Studies as part of Edinburgh University. Getting lost in the corridors of Summerhall was all part of the magic, from turning a corner and ending up in the outside courtyard filled with glittering fairy lights and lanterns with pop up food trucks and bars, to finding yourself in a ribbon maze (and desperately shouting to find your way out!) on you way to the next show.

What to expect for this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival

After a welcoming drinks reception we had tickets to see three shows, though they are all very regularly on pretty much every 20-30 minutes, lasting the same amount, prepare to be amazed as you pass from show to show. I was particularly impressed by David Gerrard’s ‘Sharp Thoughts’ show a combination of both mind reading and comedy, it’s been a while since I’ve laughed as much whilst also going “but how did he do that?!” I left the show being utterly baffled by what I had just seen, and it proved to me that magic tricks, and indeed shows, are a lot more than rabbits in hats.

It’s been great to see the return of Edinburgh’s International Magic Show, and I’ll definitely be back for more next year. Not just for adults late nights shows, but they also offer a whole range of shows across the week where the whole family can get involved and be touched by just a little bit of magic. Who knows, maybe I’ll learn to shuffle a deck of cards yet! Have you been to this years Magic Festival?
