Top 10 Date Night Movies

Sometimes there’s nothing better than just getting cosy inside and watching a movie together whilst snacking on old fashioned sweets, and of course popcorn! It’s something me and Luke do together quite frequently and over the years I’ve come to compile a list of our top ten movie date night films. A combination of comedy, rom-coms, and heartwarming tear jerkers, it’s good to have a mix and I recommend them all.

Silver Linings Playbook

Following his time in a mental institution, Pat is discharged and moves home with his parents. Longing for the love back of his wife Nikki he attempts to transform himself for the better hoping to find a silver lining, and in doing so learns some important life lessons on his journey; where he realises he was looking in the wrong direction all along. A truly uplifting story with both heartbreaking and happy moments along the way, you won’t be left feeling disappointed with this one.

In Bruges

I haven’t laughed so hard at a film in ages, there was just something so funny about the dark humour in it that killed both me and Luke laughing. We found ourselves quoting it for days after! About London based hit men, ray and Ken, who are told to lie low in Bruges following their latest hit to await further instructions. If you’ve ever been made to go somewhere you never wanted to be and find yourself complaining the whole trip, you will relate to this so much. It’s absolutely hilarious yet sincere all at the same time, and it’s certainly one of the ‘comedy date night’ film area

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

I love Jim Carey, so this film was a winner for me. A story about a heartbroken girlfriend who undergoes a procedure to erase all her memories of Joel (as played by Jim Carey) leading him to do the same. A story of true love conquering all in the end, not only is it heartwarming but it’s also really thought provoking and makes you see things in a whole new light.

Hitch

An oldie but a goodie, I am a huge fan of Will Smith, and Hitch is one of the favourite comedies I’ve ever seen him in. It’s so relate-able to if you’ve ever been un-lucky in love and I found myself crying with laughter the whole way through, with a nice heart warming touch at the end.

Back to the Future

I’m not going to lie, I am the biggest Back to the Future fan (all three) and have seen them so many times over that I’ve lost count. So for quotability purposes (can I get a great Scott?!) this will always be on my date night list.

The Graduate

Filmed in the 60s, not only is this a gorgeous film to watch for the style and fashions, but it’s also one I would recommend to all. Finding himself feeling lost with what to do with life after graduating, and with the pressure of his family on him, Ben becomes trapped in an affair with a family friend, Mrs Robinson, who through all their complications, finds himself falling in love with her daughter Elaine. A true love story with a less than conventional ending, sees Ben fight for the one he loves against all odds. However, prepare for Simon and Garfunkle sons to be stuck in your days afterwards as they consist of the entire movie soundtrack.

Up

If you’ve still not seen Up then you are seriously missing out. Not only does it appeal to all audiences, but I never knew just how much an animated film could play on your heart strings. The story of true love as Carl attempts to live out his wife’s last wishes of an adventure at Paradise Falls. Meeting along the way a young boy scout called Russel, who form an unlikely friendship and embark on an adventure together.

Amelie

The story of an innocent young girl in Paris who’s desire to help those around her, finds love along the way. It’s a lovely little film and beautifully shot, and it’s always nice to watch a film in another language.

The Wedding Singer

Robbie, the singer and Julia, the waitress are both engaged to be married but to the wrong people. Fortune intervenes to help them discover each other. A great romantic comedy to watch together, and very funny. As much as I may hate to say it, Adam Sandler movies are a bit of a guilty pleasure!

Love Actually

Although it might be deemed as a bit of a Christmas film, I could watch Love Actually all year round and it never fails to leave me feeling uplifted, and who doesn’t love a good old happy ending? Also, Billy Mack absolutely makes this film and is my favourite bit about the whole thing.

So there you have it, my top ten date night movies. What’s your favourite to watch? Do you think I’m missing any off my list?

Silver Linings Playbook and Love Actually are two of my favourite films! x

  • When i saw the title of this one my first thought was Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, one of my all time favourites and it gives me such renewed faith in love. Not that I need it…but it's always nice to be reminded. Our go to is 50 First Dates although the husband has an unhealthy thing for Notting Hill.

Will have to give In Bruges another go I think, I only half watched it and don't remember it being that funny.
