The Date Night Jar

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you’ll know that I’ve been with my boyfriend Luke for a long time. Over Christmas we celebrated five years together, after spending two years together at college, and three years apart for university, we are now joined together once more after I moved to Edinburgh after I graduated, whilst Luke finishes his studies.

We got so used to the routine of seeing one another for two weekends each month (both here and at home) that it was a case of cramming in everything we could into two days. But now we are both living in the same place, we do see each other more obviously but we found ourselves slipping into routine and no longer making the most of our weekends together and barely managing to sort out what to do for a date together after a long week of working.

And so, it was decided that we needed a new plan of action, and then I came up with the idea of having a date jar. Filled with ideas for us to do either for free, or for less than Β£10 in the city. Once they were all written down and folded up to be a secret until selected, our weekend date fate lay in the metaphorical hands of…my glass ikea storage jar.

We have a ‘no exceptions’ rule unless it is really not weather appropriate, but I’m excited for the weekends now and know that it won’t just be another one lazing around watching TV in bed, though that’s never a bad thing. I found some great ideas for date ideas on Camille’s blog – here, and also by looking through things to do in our city on things like Trip Advisor.

What do you think? Will you be making yourselves a date jar for weekend ideas?

  • This is such a lovely idea Louise! Super cute. It'd make a lovely Valentine's gift as well actually, for couples who prefer to do things than have things!

I completely get the whole 'getting into a routine' thing. My boyfriend and I have lived apart for three years at uni, and have now been living together (with his parents!!) for a year. It's tough to snap out of a routine and actually go on dates, especially when we're supposed to be saving for a deposit! I love the idea of collecting together weekend dates though!

  • This is such a good idea. I've been with my boyfriend for 5 years this year and we're very guilty of doing the same thing every weekend (fajitas and a movie) so I think I'll give this a go x

  • This is such a cute idea. I've been with my boyfriend 5 years this year, too, (and his name is also Luke haha!), and we are SO guilty of just lazing around together doing nothing. I think this might end up being his '5 year anniversary' gift from me!

  • Ahhh, so cute. After five years married, I'm determined to instigate something similar this year – two jobs apiece means we have fallen into bad habits. x

  • Such a cute idea!

We have a date night jar and I absolutely love it! It makes our dates just that little bit more exciting, not knowing what we will be doing that day until we pull something out of the jar. I love surprises! x

Ah this is such a good idea. I love how it also keeps you guessing and you don't know which one you may get, makes you excited for the weekend x

  • I love this idea, I definitely think I'll have to make something like this once we get a bit bored with our dates. At the moment we're still enjoying all the normal things we get to do together. πŸ™‚
