Visiting Petrin Hill & Surrounding Attractions

Built as a smaller version of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Petrin Observation Tower was built in 1891 for the Jubilee Exhibition. The tower doesn’t seem particularly tall at just 60m, but sitting at the summit of Petrin Hill at 318m high, it’s quite the view at the top.

Climb the 299 steps to reach the top of the tower and admire the view over Prague. On a clear day it’s possible to see the highest peak in the Czech Republic, the Snezka, which is 150km away. As the view is high up on the top of the hill, it’s not something for those afraid of heights. The view is amazing but you realise how high up you actually are when it comes to walking down. Pay extra and take the lift down the centre of the tower to cut this out for some piece of mind.

Getting to Petrin Observation Tower

You’ll find the Petrin tower set in beautiful landscaped gardens, which makes for a lovely afternoon stroll in the sunshine. These are also open all year round, where you’ll find an observatory and telescope open to the public. Also home to a hall of mirrors, a church and a beautiful rose garden. Most of the stone used to build the major buildings in Prague has come from Petrin Park.

To reach Petrin tower and other attractions at the top of Petrin Hill, you can take the Funicular Railway. Deporting from Ujezd street in the Lesser Town. Alternatively you can take a steep climb for 30 minutes to the top. Although steep, there are nice gardens and wooden areas to enjoy on your walk to the top. The funicular railway is part of Prague’s excellent public transport system, and a single ticket for the trams, busses, and metro is also valid for use here.
